Dean
Personnel Development Trainer, Calgary |
My career at Totem began on March 8, 1990. Jack Brown and I were hired on the same date. At that time, Totem was just launching their training program, so Jack and I were the instructor’s first students. The training we received was product knowledge.
I had been working as a salesman for about four years when I took a promotion as an estimator. I remember enjoying the position because of the new responsibility and challenges. However, I was only in the position for about three months when management asked me to be an assistant manager.
I worked as an assistant manager for about 12 years at three different locations in Calgary. During that time, I built two houses and renovated a third. The knowledge I gained working at Totem definitely helped me through those projects.
April 28, 2006 marked my first day as a trainer for Totem Building Supplies Ltd. The training has come a long way since March 8, 1990. I now instruct about 40 different courses… and love every minute of it.

Tired of Being Retired?
When a recruitment advertisement for employment at the brand new Sherwood Park Totem Building Store appeared in the local newspaper in January, 2002, I decided to apply for a part-time position in sales. Six years have now passed and I am still enjoying my “retirement” job immensely due to the wonderful staff, the camaraderie, and the fact that we are all learning something new everyday. Who says that, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks?”
As a former school teacher/administrator, I enjoy solving problems encountered by our loyal customers and assisting them in planning their home projects. Also, due to the knowledge gained while working at Totem, I have become much more confident myself in completing most projects be it plumbing, electrical, tiling or carpentry. The staff discounts that we enjoy, even on sale items, are an added bonus in working at Totem. However, I must warn prospective retirees planning to work at Totem that sometimes you could spend more than you make because it is so hard to pass up those great buys on tools and merchandise! At Sherwood Park Totem, the administration has been very flexible regarding the hours of work per week. If you wish to take some time off during the winter months, it can easily be arranged.
In summary, if you have a positive attitude, patience, and an inclination towards home improvement projects, it is a great place to work!

The Guiness World Record for the most 6 inch nails hammered into a block of wood in one minute was 10, achieved by Andy Kane, aka 'Handy Andy' at the BBC Television Studios in London, July 25, 2005. On January 16, 2008, three Calgary framers took on the same challenge at Totem.
